Step 1: Complete the Permit Application Form

  • When applying for a permit to carry out works on or near TasRail land, applicants use the Permit Application form and provide supporting documentation, including:
  • A clear explanation of why access is required
  • A detailed description of the works, including methodology, equipment, and timeframes
  • Professional drawings showing:
    • All proposed works within TasRail land
    • Exact location, including GPS coordinates at each end of the service crossing (if possible)
    • All existing services in the area, with confirmed locations and depths verified on-site
  • Note: If infrastructure is to remain within the corridor, applicants must complete Part C of the Permit Application Form – Agreement to Enter into a Licence.

Please note the following general requirements:

  • Under boring is strongly preferred over trenching through rail tracks.
  • All proposed service crossings under rail tracks are to be:
    - at least 2m below the tracks
    - encased in encasing compliant with the latest version of AS4799.

Please read the sections below about the different phases of the application process, and possible additional costs.

Application process

There are three phases to our process:

  • Phase 1:  TasRail internal submission review
  • Phase 2:  Track Engineer Manager approval,
  • Phase 3:  TasRail licensing of the asset, followed by arranging site access via a Permit prior to commencing works.

During the process, we review your design drawings, consult internally and externally, and prepare, draft and execute any required licences.

The entire process can take from 3 to 12 months to complete depending on the complexity of the project and other land use and operational considerations.
