TrackSAFE MEDIA RELEASE - R U OK? on track in Melbourne

PublishedMay 12, 2015
A bright yellow tram will be encouraging Melbourne commuters to transform a mate’s journey by asking “are you ok?”

The conversation-starter tram is part of a proactive approach by the Australian rail industry to address the emotional wellbeing of its 110,000 employees and millions of

passengers.

The tram is the brainchild of the TrackSAFE Foundation and Yarra Trams, in partnership with suicide prevention charity R U OK?.

“We want to give rail staff and passengers the confidence and capacity to talk about life’s ups and downs and remind them that a conversation can make a real difference,” said TrackSAFE Chairman Bob Herbert AM.

TrackSAFE member Yarra Trams has donated and wrapped the tram and is proud to be associated with R U OK?

“We want to foster a supportive and encouraging workplace environment, so that asking ‘are you ok?’ becomes the norm,” said Yarra Trams Director of Safety & Environment, Damien Kook.

“Having a tram wrapped with this reminder will help reinforce the importance of this message to rail staff and passengers in Melbourne.

R U OK? General Manager Brendan Maher said the tram will be encouraging people to get on board with R U OK? up until September.

“Research shows that regular and meaningful conversations can make a difference to someone who is struggling with life. We hope that anyone who sees the tram will reach out to a mate who needs a bit of extra support,” said Brendan.

Look out for the R U OK? tram on routes 55, 57, 59 and 82 from Tuesday 12 May.
